Attracting the most talented employees often means recruiting those with a great passion for their work.
Many members of our team offer unrivalled expertise after spending years honing their skills in a labour of love.
And the same commitment and ambition is what we look for in our apprentices as the future success of Broxap Street Furniture lies with our people.
For Alex McDonald and Owen Stanway, their experience of engineering at college and school was enough for them to realise that was the career path they wanted to take.
Alex, now 25, joined Broxap Street Furniture in 2014.
He’d studied for an engineering qualification at college. Then aged 18, he knew that he wanted to progress further in the field – but in the workplace rather than through higher education routes.
Alex said: “For me, further expanding my knowledge in a workplace environment really appealed.
“I’d enjoyed my college course and knew that was what I wanted to do.
“The idea of earning while I was learning by taking up an apprenticeship seemed like the best starting point for me.
“I knew that I could put what knowledge I already had into practice, while also learning something new every day.”

A defined career path

Alex completed a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction and the Built Environment by 2016 and is now a Project Draughtsman working in the design office alongside current apprentice Owen.
Aged 16, Owen found his interest in engineering sparked by a work experience placement which covered Computer-Aided Design (CAD).
He joined Broxap in September 2021 as a Digital Engineering apprentice and just a few months in he’s enjoying the role.
He said: “Because I’d enjoyed my work experience I thought it was a good fit to try as a job.
“I didn’t really know what to expect and just being in the workplace, working with people on different projects and getting to know everyone, is a learning curve.
“I’m working on our standard products, learning what’s involved in the design and build, and starting to get experience of bespoke projects too so it’s going really well.”

The wide range of products and services offered by Broxap puts the skills of our engineers to the test as we work with clients big and small to transform outdoor spaces across the UK.
The design office is called upon to liaise with various teams across our divisions, from sales to surveyors, as well as outside partners such as architects as Alex, Owen and their colleagues transform ideas and concepts into safe, compliant, fit-for-use structures.
Pulling complex engineering principles, accurate measurements and construction data together with a keen understanding of the vision our clients want to achieve is something we pride ourselves on.
And having a sustainable, growing workforce through the recruitment of apprentices means Broxap will continue breathing new life into places for years to come.
We recruit apprentices across all areas of the business including manufacturing, IT and maintenance.
The theme of National Apprenticeship Week 2022, which runs from February 7, is Build the Future - something our teams literally do every day.
Recent projects undertaken by Alex include the delivery of a stunning, colourful covered walkway at Ravensdale Infant School in Derby.
The project, for contractor Morgan Sindall Construction, is part of £6.9 million modular school build to replace the previous primary school which was destroyed by fire.
Alex said: “There are different challenges every day and it keeps me interested.
“An apprenticeship was vital to further expanding my knowledge and now I use that to make projects work for our clients.”
