On-the-go recycling schemes are being given a lift with the launch of a new grant.
#InTheLoop, was initiated in Leeds in 2018, involving the installation of dozens of bright yellow bins designed and manufactured by Broxap.
Emblazoned with simple but effective messaging, the one-year trial saw recycling rates by visitors to the city centre almost triple, with 160,000 plastic bottles; 140,000 cans and 1.2 million coffee cups diverted from landfill.
Since then, we’ve been privileged to work with environmental charity Hubbub on a wide range of recycling campaigns.
And with the launch of the #InTheLoop grant fund, we are looking forward to helping more communities improve their recycling rates and reduce waste.

#InTheLoop grant

To help local authorities and other organisations address the issue of recycling outside of the home, Hubbub and its partners have £16,000 grants available to deliver campaigns, including networks of recycling bins, in two new areas.
It aims to build on the success of the #LeedsByExample project as well as six further #InTheLoop campaigns and Treasure Your River, the largest ever collaboration to reduce litter along five major UK rivers.
Each of these projects focused on providing more recycling points combined with ongoing campaign delivery support.
Successful applicants need to be able to demonstrate ambitious, robust long-term plans to boost recycling in their area. The grants will fund the purchase of recycling bin infrastructure with ongoing support available from Hubbub.

Lessons learned

Hubbub says less than half of local authorities currently have on-street recycling systems in place, while 94% of the British public would like to see more recycling points made available when out and about.
It is estimated than 9 in 10 households recycle but just 4 in 10 people recycle their litter while on-the-go.
#InTheLoop projects, which also include #InTheLoop Telford supported by Broxap, have in total collected and recycled more than 2.5 million plastic and glass bottles and cans.
The key takeaways from the campaigns are to:

·         Install bright bins – colourful bins stand out on busy streets.

·         Be specific – cut down the risk of contamination with clear labelling.

·         Bins need buddies – recycling bins need to be accompanied by general litter bins to avoid waste build up.

·         Keep it positive – use simple, clear messages to get the best results.

·         Repetition is key – make sure there are plenty of recycling bins available.

·         Build a partnership – keep promoting the recycling-on-the-go message to encourage more people to use the recycling bins.

·         Measure and make better – monitor the success of recycling campaigns and refine the approach accordingly.

Boosting recycling-on-the-go

Organisations eligible to apply to the #InTheLoop fund include local authorities, business improvement districts, shopping centres, property owners and transport hubs.
The deadline for applications is March 17, 2023 but for those organisations which are not successful, Hubbub has released a free toolkit so #InTheLoop can be replicated across the UK.
The free resources are designed to reduce contamination among recyclables leading to higher recycling rates.
They include sample social media posts, posters, stickers, survey templates and Hubbub research into re-use systems.
