By the year 2030, the Government wants at least 50% of trips around our towns and cities to be made on foot, bike or wheelchair.
Active Travel England, the Government’s executive agency responsible for making walking, wheeling and cycling everyone’s preferred choice, says that to meet this target local authorities need to ensure people have access to high-quality infrastructure.
It believes councils with strong leadership, ambition and a track record of delivery will succeed in meeting the objective on time.
Choosing Broxap as an active travel partner is one way to boost those chances.
Broxap works with a wide range of clients in locations across the UK, specialising in transforming outdoor spaces so more people can enjoy healthy lifestyles.
As well as working with local authorities, public transport operators, schools and contractors, we also partner with end users such as resident groups and workplaces to provide linked-up facilities for more connected communities.
Complementing local authority projects with the likes of workplace infrastructure and facilities in commercial or retail areas is one way to ensure the public pound goes as far as possible – and active travel goals are met.

On Your Feet Britain

On Your Feet Britain Day takes place on April 27th, 2023. It is aimed at raising awareness among office workers of the health risks associated with long periods of sitting down.
It urges people to #SitLess and #MoveMore with workplaces encouraged to host lots of fun activities on April 27th to spark healthy habits.
It wants to get people going for a walk at lunchtime; parking their cars further away from the office; cycling into work; and participating in a more active working environment.
At Broxap, we have designed a range of high-capacity cycle parking systems to accommodate busy transport interchanges and major employment sites such as hospitals.
The Easi-Riser Two Tier Cycle Parking System combines traditional Sheffield Cycle Stands with space saving upper tier storage.
We also offer a range of cycle parking shelters which can accommodate these systems, such as the  Wardale Two Tier Cycle Shelter, ideal for further and higher education sites, and the Coventry Cantilever Two Tier Cycle Shelter which we installed at Euston Station.
The Apollo Two Tier Cycle Shelter was recently installed by our teams across the high profile Silverstone Park in Northamptonshire – an essential facility for employees based at out-of-town business sites who don’t have access to a car.
In addition to cycle parking infrastructure, we also have an outdoor fitness and playground division.
As well as creating active play opportunities for pupils, our adults’ range of outdoor gym equipment is ideal for workplaces and employment parks offering lunchtime, before and after work gym sessions to staff for free.

Local authority active travel capability ratings

Danny Williams, Chief Executive of Active Travel England, says: “Done well, active travel provision creates attractive, healthy places where people want to live and invest, benefiting local economies and returning very high value for money.”
He added: “Working with ambitious local authorities will be at the heart of everything we do because we won’t achieve our targets without councils delivering consistently, high-quality infrastructure that people choose to use, so we will continue to work in partnership, to co-create and share best practice.”
The active travel capability ratings have been developed to understand the current capabilities of local authorities including how effective they are at delivering active travel schemes, whether the correct support is offered and whether maximum value for money is achieved.
Ratings range from 0 – where there is no obvious leadership for active travel, no plans in place and no evidence of delivering complex schemes – to rating 4 – where there is an established culture of active travel and evidence of increases in this activity, underpinned by a dense integrated network and policies to give more people the choice to walk or cycle.
In our work across the UK, we have supported a wide range of active travel schemes, not only through the provision of secure cycle parking facilities but also with the addition of seating and other street furniture along walking routes.
In Stirling, for example, Litchard Seats with inclusive design features were installed at key meeting points in the city and along popular travel routes as part of efforts to become a dementia-friendly community.

Active Design

Linking up workplaces, shopping areas, commercial sites and visitor attractions with active and sustainable travel options is at the heart of the Active Design Guidance currently under review by Sport England.
It is examining responses to its guidance, which focuses on ensuring the places where people live, work, and enjoy promote regular physical activity in daily life, through walking, cycling, informal or formal sport and other means.
Active Design wraps together the planning and considerations that should be made when designing the places and spaces we live in so that the active choice is the easy choice.
It is made up of 10 principles including prioritising active travel through safe, integrated walking and cycling routes; well-designed streets and spaces to support a broader variety of users; and creating the conditions for active travel between all locations.
As a single source supplier to a wide range of clients across all sectors, Broxap is the home of street furniture and active travel infrastructure.
Created with care at our manufacturing base in the heart of England, our high-quality product range includes seating; planters; litter bins and bollards; shelters, canopies and walkways; cycle storage and parking; outdoor fitness and playground equipment.
