This week is Road Safety Week, which runs from November 17th to 23rd and aims to raise awareness of road safety. Brake, the UK's leading road safety charity, is running this national awareness week.
Each year, they have a different theme that attempts to get everyone in the community thinking about how they can help improve road safety. This year's theme is 'After the Crash', prioritising road victims, raising awareness of the devastating toll of road crashes, and celebrating the work of the incredible people who support families after a road death or serious injury.
At Broxap we encourage road safety and believe that many of our products can help to improve road safety in one way or another.
Bollards
Bollards create a physical barrier, helping to direct foot traffic and separating the pavement from the road. This is especially helpful in busy areas where vehicle speed and volume can pose risks to those on foot.
Properly placed bollards can help regulate the flow of traffic. They can block off certain areas, guide drivers on the correct paths, restrict access to specific locations or reduce congestion. By managing vehicle navigation, bollards reduce the likelihood of accidents.
Bollards can also be designed to improve visibility at road crossings and intersections. At Broxap, we can powder coat bollards in bright colours and retrofit them with reflective materials to help alert drivers to their presence. This increased visibility helps to draw attention to areas where pedestrians are likely to cross, helping to reduce the chances of accidents.
One of the more critical roles of bollards is to provide crash protection. Solid and durable bollards can absorb impact and protect public spaces, buildings, and people.
Beyond their functional benefits, bollards can also enhance the look of spaces. Available in a variety of designs, colours, and materials, they can be integrated into the overall design of a streetscape, making it both safer and more visually appealing.
Cycle Parking
Cyclists and pedestrians are amongst the most vulnerable road users in the UK. RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents state that each year at least 3,000 cyclists, including children, are either killed or seriously injured in the UK alone.
Steering clear of areas with heavy traffic can significantly reduce the risk of collisions. As well as choosing routes with minimal traffic, cyclists should look for paths that include designated cycle lanes.
Cyclists should also ensure their bicycles are in optimal condition. Performing pre-ride checks is crucial, especially when cycling near or on the road. These checks should include:
- Ensuring the brakes function efficiently, allowing safe stops in various weather conditions.
- Cleaning and lubricating all moving parts to prevent them from seizing and causing accidents.
- Checking that all lights and reflectors are operational, and regularly replacing batteries in front and rear lights.
- Tightening all nuts and bolts to prevent them from loosening, which could lead to collisions.
Another safety precaution which should be taken seriously is the correct storage of your bicycle. To prevent bikes from being damaged or stolen, you should ensure that your bike is locked away in a safe and secure cycle parking facility.
Broxap has cycle parking solutions that offer cyclists a safe and secure place to store their bicycles. We specialise in designing, manufacturing, and installing high-quality cycle parking infrastructure for all locations and needs. Our designs aim to inspire confidence among cyclists that they will be able to access secure parking wherever they go.
Planters
Planters may be seen as quite a peculiar form of traffic control; however, they have multiple uses when it comes to enhancing road safety. Cast iron planters can be used as a form of bollard. These large and sturdy structures can be placed along the kerbside to help prevent traffic from colliding with the pavement following an accident. They can also be placed within a pedestrian-only zone to ensure traffic cannot proceed along that route.
Planters are also said to be a traffic-calming solution. When placed at the roadside, they can help improve drivers' temperaments and influence them to slow down. Because of this, councils and communities all over the UK have decided to place both planters, with floral arrangements and trees, along the roadside.

This week is Road Safety Week! It runs from the 15th - 21st of November and aims to draw attention towards road safety! This national awareness week is run by Brake the UK’s leading road safety charity. Each year they have a different theme! The theme attempts to get everyone in the community thinking about how they can help to improve road safety! This year’s theme is road safety heroes, celebrating the heroic work of road safety professionals, and explaining how we can all play a part in making journeys safer for everyone. At Broxap we encourage road safety and believe that many of our products can help to improve road safety in one way or another. Therefore we have come up with a list of products, which will help to keep our roads safer for everyone.
Bollards.
Bollards are a great way to encourage road safety and ensure that vehicle users have the correct restrictions in place to ensure the safety of both themselves and pedestrians. Access Control bollards are great for mapping out pedestrianised areas and limiting access either all the time or during certain time periods. By placing these on either side of a pedestrianised zone you can prevent unwanted collisions in areas in which vehicles should not be entering. This not only makes the roads safer for vehicles, as they have a device which redistricts them from accessing rather than a signpost which could be missed, it also makes designated safety areas for pedestrians so that they can walk, or shop without the risk of traffic related incidents. Bollards can also be placed along the roadside. These bollards are a great safety feature and again should minimise the amount of unexpected accidents involving pedestrians. These bollards can also act as a barrier which can take the impact of a collision if one were to happen. This should mean that a passing pedestrian will come away unharmed, or without serious injury. Our range of cast iron bollards, including the Kerbside Protector are perfect for enhancing safety for both vehicle users, cyclists and pedestrians.
Cycle Parking.
Cyclists along with pedestrians are amongst the most vulnerable road users in the UK. RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents state that each year at least 3,000 cyclists, including children, are either killed or seriously injured in the UK alone. Therefore it is pinnacle that during Road Safety Week we raise awareness for the safety of cyclists. In order to avoid road accidents there are a few key rules which cyclists should follow. These rules are designed to protect the cyclist from injury! When planning a route cyclists should avoid busy roads, junctions and roundabouts. By avoiding areas with a heavy traffic flow cyclists are more likely to avoid a collision. As well as ensuring that cyclists try to stick to routes with minimal traffic, they should also try and select a route which has designated cycle lanes. This will ensure that they spend as little time on the road as possible, hence reducing the risk of accidents. Cyclists should also ensure that their bike is in optimal condition, this means that the bike should be serviced regularly at a specialised bike shop. As well as these regular services cyclists should also ensure that they are checking their bikes before they ride anywhere, especially when cycling on or near the road. These checks include checking that the breaks work efficiently meaning that they will allow you to stop in multiple weather conditions. Another important check is that all moving parts are cleaned and well oiled, this will prevent them from seizing up and causing you to fall from your bike. You should also ensure that all lights and reflectors are in working condition and that the batteries in both the front and rear lights are replaced regularly. Finally all nuts and bolts should be tightened regularly to ensure that they do not become loose and cause a collision. Another safety precaution which should be taken seriously is the correct storage of your bicycle. In order to prevent bikes from being damaged by other people one must ensure that their bike is locked away in a safe and secure cycle parking facility. Broxap design, manufacture and install cycle parking solutions which offer cyclists a safe and secure place to store their bicycle. This will help to prevent damage caused by other people, for example loosening of screws or the deliberate deflating of tyres.
Planters
Planters may be seen as quite a peculiar form of traffic control however they do appear to have multiple uses when it comes to enhancing road safety. Cast iron planters can be used as a form of bollard. These large and sturdy structures can be placed along the kerbside to help prevent traffic from colliding with the pavement following an accident. They can also be placed within a pedestrian only zone to ensure that traffic cannot proceed along that route, henceforth improving the safety of pedestrians. Planters are also said to be a traffic calming solution and when placed at the roadside they can help to improve the temperament of drivers and influence them to slow down. Due to this being the case councils and communities all over the UK have decided to place both planters, with both interesting floral arrangements and trees along the roadside. This has been tried and tested and it has been said that after planters were installed traffic did appear to slow. This Road Safety Week Brake’s key aim is to reduce the amount of vehicles which break the speed limit on our roads. Broxap are big supporters of improving road safety and believe that our products which are listed above, along with our specific Speed Restriction Ramps can help them on their mission to make our roads safer for vehicle users, pedestrians and cyclists all over the UK.
