Drop Off Canopy at Airedale Hospital - Broxap

Working with Contractor Willmott Dixon, Broxap was asked to design a series of canopies that would be used by ambulances arriving at the hospital and transferring patients to the main building.

The project formed part of a larger scheme of works by Willmott Dixon which included the refurbishment of the endoscopy, maternity and accident and emergency departments as well as ward improvements.

The works for the accident and emergency department included the construction of a whole new facility with a separate adults' and children's waiting area. The plans also called for a screened entrance for ambulances.

The final solution delivered by Broxap was a series of Cambridge Cantilever canopies that the vehicles could easily reverse beneath. The canopies allow patients to be transferred to the main building quickly and efficiently while being protected by the canopy cover.

Pick up and drop off canopies perform a number of important functions, particularly in healthcare settings. At busy hospitals, canopies can be used to form a separate dedicated area for ambulances and emergency vehicles, giving priority to the patients most in need of attention.

The structures also help to protect patients from the elements and can create spaces suitable for the movement of equipment such as hospital beds.

In schools, pick up and drop off canopies direct drivers to the correct location within large car parks, as well as keeping pedestrians safe and dry.
