What canopies and shelters do hospitals and healthcare sites need?

Healthcare sites typically combine several of the structures below. Broxap can design and build them together so they work as one scheme.

Structure Typical use at healthcare sites
Drop-off and pick-up canopies Shelter for patients getting in and out of vehicles and for ambulances transferring patients in the dry. Built to dimensions that clear vehicle height and leave room to board safely.
Entrance canopies Extra cover and a focal point that highlights the main entrance and helps visitors find their way.
Covered walkways Sheltered links between departments, buildings and car parks that keep patients dry and comfortable.
Smoking and vaping shelters and quiet zones Designated areas in the hospital grounds and gardens.
Cycle shelters, compounds and hubs Secure, accessible parking for staff, patients and visitors, from a simple shelter to an enhanced-security hub.
Outdoor dining and social canopies and courtyard canopies Sheltered staff areas and refreshed courtyards.
Street furniture Benches, litter bins and bollards to complete the project.

Where are canopies and shelters used on healthcare sites?

Broxap has designed and installed canopies and shelters for:

Emergency departments

Drop-off canopies for ambulances and arriving patients, such as those at Royal Derby Hospital, Airedale Hospital and Wexham Park Hospital.

Main entrances

Covered, welcoming approaches that help visitors find their way.

Links between buildings

Covered walkways that keep patients and staff dry between departments, such as the walkway at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust.

Staff courtyards and break areas

Sheltered outdoor spaces, such as the courtyards at Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Hospital grounds and car parks

Cycle shelters, smoking and vaping shelters and quiet zones.

Primary care and multidisciplinary practices

Smaller private and public healthcare settings that need entrance and drop-off cover.

What are the benefits of canopies at a hospital?

  • Protection for patients: drop-off and entrance canopies let patients move between vehicle and building in the dry, and ambulances transfer patients under cover.
  • Clearer routes: entrance and drop-off canopies act as a visual guide and focal point for visitors who are unsure of their way.
  • Safer, more comfortable movement: covered walkways keep patients dry and comfortable as they move around the site.
  • Better staff facilities: sheltered courtyards, cycle parking and designated areas support staff wellbeing.
  • A site that suits its surroundings: materials and styles can match the existing landscape or architecture.
  • Safety first: Broxap has long experience designing, manufacturing and installing canopies for healthcare settings.

How do you specify a hospital or healthcare canopy?

Specifying a healthcare canopy comes down to four choices, which you can filter on in the product range above:

  • Style: mono-pitch, duo-pitch, cantilever, gull-wing or central column.
  • Material: a steel frame with polycarbonate or glass roofing, steel cladding, or timber where a natural finish suits the setting. See our polycarbonate and glass canopies.
  • Guttering: external or internal.
  • Fixing: base plated or root fixed, depending on the ground conditions and structure.

For drop-off canopies, also confirm the clearance needed for vehicles and the space needed for patients to board safely. BIM objects are available for selected products to support specifiers.

Can healthcare canopies be bespoke or made to measure?

Yes. As well as our standard range, Broxap provides a complete design and build solution, from initial ideas through to installation. Our design and build teams can customise a standard product or create an entirely bespoke one for any site, designed and manufactured to complement your existing buildings and surroundings.

What our customers say

"Pleasure to work with!"

"I am writing to pass on my thanks to your site installation team of Mark Brown and Robert Price for their hard working and collaborative attitude in installing the walkway whilst maintaining access to the Discharge Hub and without disrupting other adjacent areas. They were a pleasure to work with and are a credit to Broxap.

The walkway itself has been gratefully received by the Hospital staff in the recent heavy rain.

We look forward to working with you again soon."
