2D/3D Sheet Metalwork Draughtsman
About Us:
Broxap is a family owned engineering business based in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, established in 1946. We are amongst the market leaders in the design and manufacture of street furniture, shelters and covered walkways.
Working Hours: Monday to Friday 08:00 - 16:30, with additional hours as may be required
Holidays: 25 days holiday entitlement, plus 8 bank holidays
Salary: Competitive market salary
Perks: Free car parking & tea and coffee facilities, profit related bonus scheme
The Role:
We are seeking an experienced Sheet Metalwork Draughtsman with a minimum of 3 years' experience to help maintain and improve our current design library and transition our existing 2D designs into optimised 3D models.
Initially, working to support our thriving Litter Bin Division, you will work with both 2D AutoCAD to maintain the existing library of flat patterns and subsequently develop and convert them into 3D models using Autodesk Inventor (preferred) or SolidWorks.
This role will also involve incorporating engineering change requests (ECRs) to increase manufacturing efficiency, optimize designs, and align with new manufacturing technologies. Experience and understanding of metal bending and forming processes and the ability to improve design workflows for modern sheet metal fabrication are key components of this position.
Key Responsibilities:
- 2D and 3D Conversion: Maintain the existing 2D AutoCAD library and catalogue 2D flat patterns, then develop these into new 3D models using Autodesk Inventor (preferred) or Solidworks.
- Engineering Change Requests (ECRs): Implement and document engineering changes to optimise designs for manufacturing, increasing efficiency, material utilisation, and alignment with new production technologies.
- Manufacturing Process Optimisation: Collaborate with the Technical Director, Design Manager and Production teams to adapt designs for modern sheet metalworking processes, including bending, laser cutting, and CNC punching.
- Design for Manufacturability: Ensure designs are manufacturable and cost-effective, with an emphasis on modularity and optimising material utilisation and improving production times.
- Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate and up-to-date design documentation, including 3D models, technical drawings, and engineering change logs, ensuring compliance with company procedures, and contributing to continuous improvement.
Experience and Required Skills:
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a Sheet Metalwork Draughtsman or in a similar design role, preferably in street furniture or related industries.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D) for cataloguing and maintaining existing flat patterns.
- Strong experience with Autodesk Inventor (preferred) or Solidworks for 3D modelling, especially in sheet metal design – however, internal training on preferred 3D suite is available for the right candidate.
- Solid understanding of bending processes and their application in sheet metal fabrication.
- Experience in adapting designs to suit new manufacturing technologies such as CNC machines, laser cutting, and automated bending.
- Ability to implement engineering change requests (ECRs) and improve manufacturing efficiency.
- Strong attention to detail, with an ability to analyse related products and optimise designs for modularity of components.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
- A qualification in engineering, industrial design, or a related field is advantageous but not essential.
- Knowledge of material properties for outdoor products, especially corrosion-resistant sheet metals like pre-galv, stainless steel and aluminium
