Platform Canopies - Type 2

SKU
BXMW/PLAT2
£POA

Originally designed for phases 1&2 of 5 on a multi-million pound station development, the independent double cantilevered canopies provide shelter for rail passengers. The canopies were designed in line with architects intent and features a monopitch glazed section to allow natural light through onto the platform. An architectural 'Bullnose' and soffit provide aesthetically pleasing lines, while hiding unsightly steel structure. These features combine to give a modern clean look to the canopy and feature the same architectural finishes which were maintained across the various stations to ensure the continuity of look, feel and aesthetics through-out the lines development.

Product Details:

Engineered for Demanding Rail Environments

Rail infrastructure requires robust, low-maintenance solutions capable of performing under constant exposure to weather and high passenger footfall. This railway platform canopy combines structural integrity with carefully considered detailing to ensure long-term reliability.

Structural Framework

The primary structure is manufactured from galvanised mild steel, providing strength and corrosion resistance in exposed locations. Key elements include:
• Circular hollow section (CHS) steel columns and spine beam
• Structural Tee cantilever arms
• Integrated concealed drainage within the main CHS columns

The double cantilever design minimises column intrusion on the platform, preserving circulation space and sightlines while maintaining structural stability.

Architectural Integration and Visual Continuity

This station canopy was conceived in line with a wider architectural vision across multiple stations, ensuring a consistent identity throughout the network. The design incorporates:
• A monopitch glazed section to introduce natural light onto the platform
• An architectural ‘bullnose’ detail for softened leading edges
• Aluminium soffit panels that conceal structural steelwork
• Clean, uninterrupted roof lines for a contemporary finish

By integrating these features, the canopy maintains a refined appearance while discreetly housing structural components and services.

For schemes requiring a cohesive public realm approach, the canopy can be specified alongside complementary elements such as seating, cycle parking, litter bins, and wayfinding solutions from Broxap’s wider street furniture and rail sector ranges.

Roofing and Glazing Specification

Durability and weather resistance are fundamental to any railway station canopy. The roofing and glazing systems have been selected to withstand the UK climate while ensuring passenger comfort.

Roofing System
• ‘Ashzip’ standing seam aluminium roofing system
• Low-pitch roof angle
• Hidden gutter system with butyl rubber lining for long-term watertight performance
• Internal drainage through main CHS columns

The standing seam system provides a secure, low-maintenance solution suited to transport infrastructure, while the concealed drainage enhances both performance and appearance.

Glazing
• Aluminium patent glazing bars
• 10.8mm laminated safety glass

The glazed monopitch section allows daylight penetration, improving visibility and passenger experience without compromising safety or durability.

Finishes and Protection

All primary steel components are hot-dip galvanised for corrosion resistance and finished with a two-pack epoxy paint system. This approach delivers:
• Long-term protection against environmental exposure
• Colour flexibility to align with operator branding or architectural schemes
• Reduced maintenance requirements over the lifecycle of the canopy

The aluminium soffit panels, pressed from 2mm aluminium, provide a crisp underside finish while protecting internal elements from the effects of weathering.

Safety and Compliance Considerations

Safety remains central to the design of any train station canopy. The Two Star Abbey system incorporates:
• Laminated safety glazing
• Integrated fall restraint system fixed to the standing seam roof
• Concealed drainage to eliminate exposed pipework

These features support safe maintenance access and help ensure compliance with relevant rail and construction standards.

Installation Context and Application

This platform canopy is suitable for:
• New railway station developments
• Platform extensions
• Multi-phase infrastructure upgrades
• Network-wide brand consistency programmes

As an independent structure, it can be installed with minimal disruption to existing buildings. Its double cantilever configuration is particularly beneficial where platform width must be preserved or where trackside constraints limit column placement.

Broxap’s in-house manufacturing and installation teams ensure coordinated delivery from fabrication through to on-site completion across the UK and Ireland.

Designed for Long-Term Performance

When specifying a railway platform canopy, durability, drainage integrity, and structural efficiency are critical. The Two Star Abbey design addresses these considerations through:
• Galvanised steel primary structure
• Concealed and internally drained gutter system
• Butyl-lined gutters to prevent long-term leakage
• Standing seam aluminium roofing
• Quality-controlled UK manufacturing

The result is a robust canopy solution that supports passenger comfort while maintaining architectural quality across complex transport environments.

Delivery Message

Broxap offer a standard carriage service for all products, this usually takes between 3-28 days as lead times vary on specific products and quantities.
