Specifying Coastal Street Furniture: A Buyer's Guide by Product Type
If you've read our technical breakdown of coastal grade finishing, you'll already know why salt-laden air is so damaging and which finishing systems hold up against it. This guide picks up from there and answers the question specifiers usually ask next: given my site, what do I actually put on the order?
The answer changes by product. A litter bin has different failure points to a bollard. A bench frame needs a different pairing again. Get the product-level detail wrong and you can specify the right material in principle and still end up with premature failure at a hinge, a liner, or a fixing.
Start With Your Exposure Zone
Before you get into product detail, place your site on the exposure scale. As a working rule, anywhere within six miles of open saltwater should be treated as a coastal specification, with the level of protection scaling up the closer you get to the water.
- Direct exposure — seafronts, promenades, harbour walls, and anywhere within roughly half a mile of open water with no windbreak. This is where you specify to the top of the range: Grade 316 stainless, Duracast PU, or a full duplex-coated system.
- Moderate exposure — coastal towns and parks set back from the water, or sites partially sheltered by buildings or tree lines. Salt loading is still a real factor here, so standard inland specs are off the table.
- Sheltered coastal — further inland but still within the six-mile zone. A robust pre-treated and primed system is usually sufficient, without needing to go to full marine-grade stainless.

Bollards
Coastal bollards take repeated vehicle contact and grit abrasion on top of everything the salt air is doing, so the finish needs to survive mechanical wear as well as corrosion. Grade 316 stainless or a fully PROTEX™-coated galvanised system are the standard choices for direct exposure. Where impact resistance matters more than in a typical pedestrian scheme (car parks, loading bays, sites prone to kerb strikes) Duracast PU cast over a steel core adds impact resistance without reintroducing a corrosion risk, since it doesn't rely on a coating layer to stay rust-proof.
Litter Bins and Recycling Units
Bins have a failure mode the other categories don't: moisture trapped inside the unit. Condensation and the odd bit of standing liquid from a liner can corrode a bin from the inside faster than salt spray attacks it from the outside. Seating and Benches
Frames and slats corrode and weather differently, so the pairing matters as much as either material alone. Grade 316 or PROTEX™-coated steel frames combined with Iroko hardwood slats is a dependable combination for exposed promenades. The timber weathers to a silver-grey patina naturally, so there's no coating to fail on that part of the product at all. For fully maintenance-averse schemes, recycled plastic benches remove the coastal risk from the equation entirely.
Cycle Parking and Shelters
These get overlooked more often than any other category when a scheme is upgraded to coastal spec, possibly because they read as "outdoor structure" rather than "street furniture." Shelters and canopies carry wind loading on top of salinity, so the frame needs to be structurally rated as well as protected. Hot dip galvanised steelwork with a full PROTEX™ system is the standard route for both cycle shelters and passenger canopies on exposed sites.




What's the actual exposure?
Distance from open water is the starting point, but check prevailing wind direction and whether buildings, dunes, or tree lines give the site real shelter.


What does whole-life cost look like?
Grade 304 or basic powder-coated steel may look cheaper on the initial quote, but a shortened replacement cycle on a coastal site usually erases that saving within a few years. Grade 316 or a full duplex system protects the upfront investment rather than adding to it.


Does it fit the design palette?
Coastal-grade doesn't mean a narrower colour or material choice. Cast and hardwood finishes suit heritage schemes; PROTEX™-coated steel opens up the full standard BS and RAL palette for contemporary public realm work.
Maintenance in a Coastal Environment
Even a correctly specified system benefits from routine care, since salt accumulates on any surface regardless of coating quality:
- Routine washdowns — a low-pressure water and mild detergent wash removes salt before it concentrates at joints and fixings, and is the single most effective way to extend coating life.
- Post-storm inspections — high winds throw sand and salt spray further inland than normal; a visual check afterwards catches mechanical chips before they become coating breaches.
- Fixing integrity — dissimilar metals in contact accelerate galvanic corrosion in salt-heavy air, so check that isolating washers and fixings remain sound.
- Prompt touch-ups — any scratch down to bare metal should be primed and topcoated quickly, before salt can get under the film.
Common Specification Mistakes
- Specifying Grade 304 instead of 316 to save on upfront cost, then seeing tea-staining and pitting within a couple of seasons on a true waterfront site.
- Relying on powder coating alone, without a galvanised base and primer underneath. Fine until the first scratch, then the substrate is exposed with no sacrificial protection left.
- Underestimating the zone — assuming a site a few streets back from the beach is out of reach of onshore salt spray.
- Overlooking secondary components — hinges, locks, internal liners, and ground fixings specified to a lower standard than the visible product, creating a weak point in an otherwise well-specified scheme.
