The business case for workplace cycle parking
Before specification comes justification. Facilities and HR teams increasingly need to build a case that stands up next to any other capital request, so it helps to know what workplace cycle parking is actually being asked to deliver.
ESG and sustainable transport credentials. Scope 3 emissions reporting now routinely includes commuter travel, and secure, covered cycle storage is one of the more visible, low-cost ways to demonstrate progress on it. Starting point: budget for 10–15% of your total workforce as a baseline, then adjust up or down based on your sector and location.
Example: a 200-person office in a town with reasonable cycling infrastructure might budget for 20–30 spaces initially, enough to avoid overcrowding at peak commuting times without over-specifying a facility nobody uses.

Parking is only the first part of the journey. Employers serious about encouraging cycling, particularly for longer commutes, increasingly pair cycle storage with wider end-of-journey facilities: showers, changing space, and secure storage for helmets and kit.

It's a low-cost way to show a facility is genuinely built for everyday use rather than installed to tick a box.

Before going out to tender or requesting quotes, it's worth having answers to:

- What's the site's security profile — is it monitored, unsupervised, or accessible 24/7?
- Does the budget account for foundations, lighting and any electrical works for e-bike charging, not just the racks themselves?
- Is there a maintenance plan and budget owner once the facility is installed?
