A bespoke wheelchair accessible play tower opened up even more attractions to visitors to the popular Paignton Zoo.
Our team was tasked with creating a play unit which people of all abilities could enjoy, compliant with the Equality Act.
This called for a series of design features which removed barriers to play.
As the play tower was to be installed on to a sloped area of the park, we created a series of ramps leading to and from the unit.
These were designed to be wheelchair accessible and created for multiple users to access at any one time.
The ramps were linked by wobbly clatter bridges as well as solid bridges. Different access points to the ramps included steps, nets, pull up ropes and ladders so each area of the play tower could be accessed in various ways, bringing all users together at the top.
As well as a tube side, we included an extra wide traditional slide into the play tower to allow people to buddy up.
A look-out platform celebrated the animal theme with windows shaped like big cats and rhinos.
Grass saver matting helped to protect the entry and exit points from getting too worn and muddy.
