BREEAM Compliance

• Cycle can be secured within spaces in rack(s). They are covered overhead and the cycle racks are set in or fixed it to a permanent structure (building or hard-standing). Alternatively the cycle storage may be located in a locked structure fixed to, or part of a permanent structure with appropriate surveillance.
• The distance between each cycle rack, and cycle racks and other obstructions, e.g. a wall, allows for appropriate access to the cycle storage space, to enable bikes to be easily stored and accessed.
• The storage facility or entrance to the facility is in a prominent site location that is viewable/overlooked from either an occupied building or a main access to a building.
• The cycle storage facility has adequate lighting, this could be demonstrated with the lighting criteria defined in BREEAM issue Hea 01 Visual Comfort. The lighting must be controlled out-of-hours use and operation during daylight hours, where there is sufficient daylight in or around the facility.

• Where the calculated number of required cycle storage spaces is less than 4 total provision should be based on the lower of the following:
  • A minimum of four compliant cycle storage spaces must be providing (unless otherwise stated) or;
  • One space per user (staff and where appropriate other user groups)
• The space is covered overhead to protect from the weather.
• Cycles are secured within spaces in rack(s). The rack(s) consist of fixings for one or more spaces.
• The covered area and the cycle racks are set in or fixed to a permanent structure (building or hardstanding). Alternatively the cycle storage may be located in a locked structure fixed to
  or part of a permanent structure with CCTV surveillance.
• The distance between each cycle rack, and cycle racks and other obstructions e.g. a wall, allows for appropriate access to the cycle storage space, to enable bikes to be easily stored
  and accessed.
• The facilities are in a prominent site location that is viewable/overlooked from either an occupied building or a main access to a building to encourage use of the facilities. Where
  cycle storage spaces are within the building, prominent signage to advertise their location to building users (not only cyclists) would be acceptable.
• Lighting of the cycle storage facility must be compliant with the external (or internal where relevant) lighting criteria defined in BREEAM issue Hea 01 Visual comfort. The lighting must
  be controlled to avoid ‘out-of-hours’ use and operation during daylight hours, where there is sufficient daylight in/around the facility.
• The majority of the cycle racks are within 100m of a building entrance (ideally within 50m). Or alternatively, in the case where the building forms part of a larger site e.g. campus, business park, hospital or prison establishment where it is not feasible to meet the 100m requirement, the assessor justifiably deems the facilities to be in an easily accessible location (within the site boundary).

• The space is covered overhead and protected from the rain
• The covered area and cycle racks are set in or fixed to a permanent structure (building or hard standing) and allow both the wheel and frame to be locked securely (e.g Sheffield type).
• Or racks are located in a locked structure fixed to or part ofa permanent structure with CCTV surveillance.
• There is a minimum distance of 1.0m between cycle racks, where the racks allow for two-sided parking, and 0.8m for one-sided parking to enable bikes to be easily stored and access.
• Racks positioned in a circular array are spaced in accordance with the guidance in the New Metric Handbook [5].
• There is a minimum distance from any obstruction e.g wall (located to either side of the stand or in front of it) of 300mm for single sided use and 900mm for double-sided use.
• Adequate lighting it provided in accordance with BS5489 Part 1 – Lighting of roads and amenity areas.
• The facilities are in a prominent site location that is viewable from the building.
• The majority of the cycle racks are within 100m of a building entrance (ideally within 50m).

• Vertical racks, which allow direct access (without the need to get alongside the locked bike) and permit one bike per stack and comply with the requirements (provided all other requirements are met).
• For this type of rack, the distance between each rack can be less than 1.0m but not less than 600mm (the typical width of a bike across the handlebars).

These types of cycle storage devices do not comply with BREEAM:

• Hooks and wall attachments
• Single wheel (butterfly) bikes rack holders (these racks provide less security and can cause damage to bike wheels).
