Why Choose a Broxap Design & Build Service?
Broxap has been specialising in providing bespoke engineering “Design & Build” solutions for architectural canopies and structures since the 1990s, producing specific designs for hundreds of developments and schemes. Established in 1946, today the family-owned and operated business manages the production of custom-made metalwork structures combined with a variety of high quality roofing or cladding materials, such as overhead glazing, market-leading polycarbonates, specialist tensile fabrics and architectural cladding.
In addition to the traditional undertakings associated to design and build type projects Broxap, with our experienced and in-depth practical knowledge of a variety of manufacturing techniques and material usage, are able to deliver ‘true’ value-engineering so as to realise the original, often over-budget, architectural concepts.
Examples of this unique service are presented here to demonstrate how we may be able to design and install unusual or sophisticated structures, whilst offering substantial savings to the client.
Midland Metro

The above captures the value-added benefits from Broxap's Design & Build offering, resulting in a saving in excess of £400,000.
Balfour Beatty was awarded a Design & Build Contract for the Midland Metro BCCE project, within which there was a provision for passenger shelters and various street furniture. The passenger shelter brief pivoted around a bus stop shelter utilised by Birmingham City Council on an earlier passenger transport improvement scheme. Early Client-led designs concepts proved uncomplimentary to the cost-plan; Broxap was invited by Balfour Beatty to provide a value-engineered solution.
Also featuring on the project was a logistically-problematic inherited canopy and structural glass balustrade scheme design for the Snow Hill Tram Stop site, a newly constructed bridge that runs over Great Charles Street. These challenges could have resulted in the need for some 50 plus night road closures and possessions situated over the busy A38, which runs through the centre of Birmingham.
Working in value-engineering discussions with the Contractor, the Client, the Engineers and the Planning Consultant, Broxap created photomontages using their already value-engineered shelter to present an alternative concept to obtain a condition of discharge notice. The planning notice was successfully obtained and the reductions to programme and cost (as well as risk) were realised.
Cramlington Hospital

£75 million pounds has been invested by the NHS to erect this purpose built state of the art specialist emergency care hospital with a further £15 million invested on roads, infrastructure and new equipment.
Broxaps’ Keep it Kool division was employed by contractors Lend Lease Construction (EMEA) Limited to construct a series of fabric tensile structures designed to give weather protection to the ambulance bay and also outside the main entrance.
Something eye catching, spectacular in scope whilst fitting the criteria of keeping in line with the new building design and giving maximum weather protection to patients and workers beneath was all part of the agenda to bring a series of canopies that were functional and awe inspiring.

Centro Selly Oak Hub

Centro is responsible for bus, rail and Midland Metro Tram transport in the West Midlands. Their aim is to encourage and support walking and cycling where it forms parts of an overall public transport journey or provide an incentive to use public transport. As part of their overall plan they wanted a pilot cycle hub to be located at Selly Oak railway station.
The staff at Centro came up with a concept design for a hub in which they envisaged would provide a step change in the quality of cycle storage at local stations. They were looking for a suitable contractor to supply and install a purpose built self-contained cycle storage facility, which was both iconic and distinctive.

Aberystwyth Station

Network Rail have invested £3.1m in the revamping of Aberystwyth Railway Station and the principal contractor Alun Griffiths working with Atkins Architects tasked Broxap to create a specialist steel and glass entrance canopy as part of the overhaul of the Station frontage at street level.
Working directly with Atkins Architects, Broxap produced designs based around their initial ideas and for a period 2 months ideas/designs and drawings were created until a satisfactory product was submitted for approval.
The agreed design was passed through the lengthy Network Rail approval system before drawings were given final approval for construction.
