Sedum Green Roofs for Canopies & Bike Shelters

Looking to enhance your building with an eco-friendly, low-maintenance roofing solution? A sedum roof (also known as a green roof or living roof) offers a host of environmental, aesthetic, and economic benefits. Whether for a new build, refurbishment project, or retrofit, sedum roofs are an increasingly popular choice across urban and commercial landscapes.

A sedum roof is a type of green roofing system that incorporates hardy, drought-tolerant plants such as sedum, installed over a specialist substrate and drainage layer. These self-sustaining plants require minimal maintenance and are well-suited to thrive in a wide range of climates and conditions, making them an ideal choice for long-lasting, low-effort green roofs.

Benefits of Sedum Green Roofs

Stormwater Management

Natural vegetation protects the roof against harsh weather conditions and UV radiation for a longer lifespan.

Air Quality Improvement

Sedum plants undergo photosynthesis, removing CO2 and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.

Biodiversity Enhancement

Sedum roofs create habitats for small animals such as birds and insects, promoting wildlife in all areas.

Reduces Energy Use

By improving insulation, sedum roofs are energy efficient as they reduce the need for heating and cooling.

Aesthetic Appeal

Sedum roofs add vibrant, natural beauty to unused roof space, transforming dull surfaces into lush environments.

Sedum Turf
Drought-resistant plants are the primary vegetation on a sedum roof, providing benefits such as improved air quality and biodiversity.
25mm Growing Medium
Specialised growing medium designed to support the sedum plants by retaining moisture while ensuring proper drainage and aeration for healthy root development.
12mm Water Retaining/Drainage Trays
Allows excess water to flow away from the growing medium, preventing waterlogging and ensuring that the sedum roots do not become overly saturated.
Retention Trim and Gutter Edge
Essential for capturing and directing excess water runoff, helping to maintain moisture levels in the growing medium and reducing wear on the waterproofing system.
EPDM Waterproofing Membrane
A protective layer preventing water from penetrating the building structure beneath the roof, safeguarding it from moisture-related damage and ensuring the longevity of the roof components.
Marine Plyboard Timber Deck
(Treated for external use): Acting as a stable base, the timber plyboard provides structural support for the sedum roof layers while also contributing to insulation and energy efficiency.
Mild Steel Roof Frame
The primary support system capable of supporting the entire sedum roof structure and distributing weight evenly to the building’s framework.

FAQs

Got a question about sedum roofs? We can help!

Sedum refers to a genus of succulent plants belonging to the Crassulaceae family. These plants are known for their ability to store water, making them tolerant to cold weather and drought resistant. Sedums are often used in landscapes and green roofs due to their resilience and low maintenance requirements.

Sedum roofs help to regulate temperatures by providing natural insulation, reducing heating and cooling costs by maintaining a temperature balance. They also absorb rainwater, reducing runoff and minimising the risk of flooding. Sedum green roof kits also look great in any space, providing habitats for various insects and birds.

Sedum green roofs require very little watering once they are established. During the initial growth phase, some watering may be necessary, especially in dry periods. However, sedums are drought-resistant and can thrive in most conditions with limited water.

Yes, green roofs do require some maintenance, although it is generally lower than traditional roofs. Maintenance tasks may include weeding, monitoring plant health, ensuring proper drainage, and occasionally fertilising to promote growth. Regular inspections, at least once a year, can help identify and address any issues early on.

A green roof can be installed on various types of roofing materials, but it's essential to ensure that the underlying structure can support the added weight and that the roof is watertight. Contact our teams for more information.

A sedum roof can weigh anywhere from 40 kg/m2 to 250 kg/m2. The weight of a sedum roof varies greatly and depends on many factors including the thickness of the growing medium, the level of plant coverage and how saturated the green roofing is.

The cost of a sedum roof depends on factors such as size, type and complexity of installation. Contact our teams to receive a free consultation and quotation for a green roof for your shelter or cycle parking system.

A well-maintained green roof system can last anywhere from 30 to 50 years or more. The longevity of the system depends on factors such as the quality of the materials used, maintenance practices and local climate conditions. Regular check-ups and maintenance can significantly extend its lifespan.

A range of sedum plants grow on the vegetation layer of a green roof including sedum pallidum, sedum hispanicum, sedum album ‘balticum’, ‘brevifolium’, ‘murale’ and ‘rhodopaeum’; sedum coral carpet, sedum acre ‘aureum’, sedum lydium, sedum spurium, sedum oreganum, yellow cushion (sedum reflexum) and many others.

It should be noted that sedum is randomly seeded from cutting, and we cannot guarantee all varieties are present in your order however you should see at least 6 random varieties per square metre.

There is a common misconception that sedum green roofs will look green, and sedum plants are always green. This is not the case, they consist mainly of low growing, drought tolerant sedum plants of many varieties that change colour and appearance with the seasons. There are 8 – 10 different varieties within the sedum carpet some very similar in appearance to others.

A successful green roof system has several key components, including a drainage layer, which manages excess water and prevents pooling, and an extensive substrate that provides the necessary nutrients for the vegetation layer. An effective root barrier is important to protect the underlying roof structure from damage caused by invasive roots.

Sedum species are naturally drought-resistant but may benefit from watering during prolonged periods without rain. By incorporating recycled materials into the design of green roof systems, we can further enhance their sustainability, making them not just an aesthetic enhancement but an eco-friendly solution that aids in stormwater management and reduces urban heat effects.

Beyond providing a lush aesthetic appeal, these green roofs contribute to energy efficiency by insulating the building, improving air quality, and supporting local ecosystems. Whether opting for a full installation or exploring modular green roof kits, a sedum roofing solution is an innovative way to create a more sustainable, green future.
