Three hospital sites are benefitting from improved cycle parking facilities as part of an ongoing sustainable travel programme.
Broxap visited Trafford General, Withington Community Hospital and Wythenshawe Hospital to carry out survey and design works and come up with cycle parking solutions to benefit staff, visitors and patients.
The new facilities are more attractive and secure, have added shelter, and allow for a much greater number of cycles to be parked.
The sustainable travel programme was launched in 2015 in preparation for the formation of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in 2018, one of the largest acute trusts in the UK.
The plan aims to reduce travel impact among the 9,000 strong workforce and significant improvements to infrastructure have been made over the years.
And in 2021 it was announced that Wythenshawe Hospital is to form the centre of a new sustainable health village, committed to Net Zero Carbon by 2038 through the promotion of green travel options.
The most recent upgrades have been overseen by contractor Novus Property Solutions which was appointed on to the Measured Term Contract Framework for the trust to maintain, improve, upgrade and refurbish the hospital estate.
Cycle parking improvements installed by Broxap for Novus have included anti-vandal shelters, based on the Wardale Compound and Wardale Shelter, with grey trapezoidal steel profile cladding sheets, galvanised and powder coated steel frames, clear side panels and manually operated lockable gates.
Senior Sheffield Cycle Racks are included.
We worked on the design of six cycle parking areas originally with the Property & Estates Development team for more than eight months to develop the cycle parking designs.
We looked at various sites, options, configurations, and orientations, to ensure the cycle parking elements that we finalised on maximised the benefits to the intended user groups.
